Ice encased Mitchell
I drove around today taking photos of how different things look when they are coated with a layer of ice and snow. There aren't as many awesome photo opportunities as there were in say, the BLIZZARD OF 2005, but it's still neat. If you are out and about taking winter photos, send me a couple at lwehde@mitchellrepublic.com
Be careful driving and walking because winter photos are not worth broken cars or bones.

A plastic bag can help your camera
In extreme temperatures like today in Mitchell, your camera can suffer.
When a camera is cold from an outdoor shoot and is then brought into say, a warm office, condensation can form inside the camera and its components.
Water + camera = bad news.
The easiest way to avoid condensation forming on your lens, and potentially inside your camera, is to put it into a plastic bag before you come back inside. That will allow the camera to warm up slowly and also, if there is any condensation, it will form on the bag. Don't ask my why - I'm not a scientist :)
On days like today, I keep a grocery bag in my pocket just in case.
brrr.

Beauty in a blizzard

I took this frosty window photo at Nepstads Floral and Gifts Thursday morning.

Ding, round two
I awoke this morning to a Daily Republic text message around 5 a.m. saying "School is Cancelled" and another at 8 a.m. saying "Snow Emergency". After I worked up enough courage to peek out the window, the thought that went through my head was "Ding, Round Two".
I spent a good chunk of the morning driving around getting photos of people shoveling sidewalks, scraping window and sliding around on the snowpacked roads.
At 9 a.m., here is what Main Street looked like, and I hear it may only get worse if the wind picks up.

If you are out and about today, drive carefully, and if you snap any photos - send them to me!

House fires
Here is a photo that one of the Kirkpatrick family members forwarded to my cell phone yesterday of their home fully engulfed in flames. Fire personnel tried to get the flames under control but the fire was too far along. Their dog, Mufasa, or "Mu" was inside the house and did not make it out. Family photos and a diamond anniversary ring that was left on a bedside table are among the items that cannot be replaced - but the Kirkpatricks were both thankful that nobody was injured.
