New Season is here!!

Tennis and Cross Country got under way this week and football started yesturday.  Volleyball starts on Monday.  Welcome to a new exciting season.

South and Red River are the favorites in boys tennis, I don't know much about cross country but I hear that Shanley Oak Grove should be good, but Bismarck High hails the top 2 runners in the state on the boys side.  On the girls side, Laura Roesler of South and Mears of West Fargo should have fun battling all season.

You would think that South football should continue to be the favorite until someone knocks them off, but I wouldn't be surprised to see West Fargo near the top of the EDC.

In Volleyball, the defending state champions, Fargo South, lost 8 seniors and will look to fill a lot of spots.  West Fargo should be the early favorite as they graduated some good players, but bring back the most experience in the EDC.

Good Luck to all teams and it should be fun!!

Hankinson Coaches Cleared

I have been following this story and it really makes me sick to my stomach that parents that do not like a coach can make up accusations and ruin a coach's reputation.  A little background:  The Geffre parents made accusations against Shawn Gravalin and his assistant for acting innappropriately with the girls.  Two different investigations have cleared both coaches of any wrong doing.  This is the article from today's Fargo Forum http://www.in-forum.com/Sports/articles/207618.  I really like this paragraph: "Part of Sansteads report read: Through this investigation it has become readily apparent that the Geffre family dislikes the girls basketball coaching staff and, in particular, Coach Gravalin. The source of this dislike appears to be the fact that Coach Gravalin does not treat Casey and Cody Geffre as the stars they and their parents believe them to be."

I think that the Geffre's owe the coaches an apology.  Also, how are those two girls going to play in that town again?  I know that if I were coaching, I wouldn't want to have anything to do with the family.  Are the rumors about the Geffre girls going to West Fargo to play for Metcalf true?  Is that possible with the NDHSAA transfer rules?

GIRLS LIONS ALL_STAR

Class A: Kylie Messer, St. Mary's; Mara Paulson, Fargo Shanley; Lexi Braun, Wahpeton; Andi Wheeler, Grand Forks Red River; Sarah Smith, Grand Forks Red River' Lynn Messer, Dickinson; Lauren Carew, Fargo Shanley; Karli Gilberston, Bismarck; Alex Feeney, Bismarck; Marlee Finley, Mandan; Kristen Anstadt, Fargo South; Vittoria Poole, Minot.

Class B: Samantha Baldwin, Grafton; Paige Anderson, Watford City; Kristin Bearstail, Bismarck Shiloh Christian; Jada Meiklejohn, LaMoure; Abby Nasset, Bowman County; Kristen Killoran, Maple Valley; Christine Miller, New Town; Brittany Wirth, Starkweather-Munich; Tana Trotter, Killdeer; Brittany Anderson, Bowman County; Valerie Scherr, Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock; Samantha Dravland, Grafton.

Some people have asked if some of the big parties have caused some girls to be left off.  Really they only girl that was Class A all conference that are not on the team is Stroup and Njos.  Not sure about Njos, is she playing volleyball?  I am pretty sure that would be the case for Stroup.

You don't see it very often that two girls from the same Class B team are on there and this year there are two from both Bowman County and Grafton.  A few girls from Class B that I do not see that I thought would be on such as Jenna Gillette, Kylie Bittner, Sami Schmidt.

I kind of feel like it isn't an All-Star game without many of the All-Staters.  I would have also liked to see Ashley Privratsky on there too if this were a true "All-Star" game.

Party TIme!!

It is that time of the year when there are plenty of spring parties.  Prom, Graduation, and its just too nice out to sit at home.  This brings up the question of training rules.  Is NDHSAA hard enough on athletes that get caught drinking?

Right now it is 6 weeks for the first offense and 18 weeks for the second offense.  Fargo Public Schools has a rule that if you are caught during the season, you are done with that season.  Is it right for schools to go above and beyond the NDHSAA?  Is it in the best interest of some athletes to be done for the season?  Maybe that just causes them to drink more.

What about the two week rule where if an athlete is at a party and not drinking, then they only get two weeks.  Is this fair?  What if they were making a good choice by being the designated driver?  What about the people that lie and tell the AD that they were there and not drinking?  Why should their punishment be less than the athlete that told the truth and said they were drinking?

Should All-Star games exclude athletes that have training violations?  There is a rumor flying around that the Lion's All Star game might be without some prominant names.  Is this fair?
