Last week, somebody from GOP gubernatorial candidate Dave Knudson's staff called and asked to visit with us during an upcoming campaign stop in Mitchell. Knudson came to our office today, and I conducted a half-hour interview with him. I plan to publish the interview in Q&A form in Saturday's paper.

When Knudson got to our office, the first thing he did was pick up a copy of today's paper and begin reading the story at the top of Page 1. The story relates Gov. Mike Rounds' vow to to cut expenses instead of seeking tax increases to balance the state budget.

After reading that, Knudson, the state Senate majority leader, said it's unlikely the Legislature will be able to pass any tax increases without the governor's support. So that means we're probably headed for some significant cuts to state government.

There'll be more about that in Saturday's Q&A.
