Rain washes out JC baseball team again
For the second straight day, rain in the Sunshine State cost the Jamestown College baseball team a couple of games.
Friday was the final day of the Jimmies’ trip to Ormond Beach, Fla., but due to the wet weather, they ended up only getting to play 6 games instead of the scheduled 10.
The Jimmies, who went 4-2 in their 6 games in Florida, were supposed to play Tiffin (Ohio) and Ashford (Iowa) Friday.
The forecast for the rest of the weekend was for sun and 70-plus degrees.
It was especially disappointing for Tom Hager’s team, who lost a mountain of games last season because of the endless winter and soaking spring.
“It’s frustrating for this to happen, but there isn’t much anybody can do about it,” he said. “We thought we played pretty good baseball when we actually were able to get out there and play. Unfortunately, we just weren’t able to get out there as much as we would have liked.”
Weather and field-conditions permitting, the Jimmies (7-3) are scheduled to play back-to-back doubleheaders against Midland Lutheran on March 20 and 21 in Fremont, Neb.

JC women beaten in Sioux City
The Jamestown College women’s basketball team had its season come to an end on Friday, due in large part to cold shooting.
The Jimmies, who finished the season with a school record 26 wins, shot just 35 percent in their 72-60 loss to Iowa Wesleyan in the second round of the NAIA national tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Jimmies (26-7) were especially off from deep, making just 3 of 23 3-point attempts in the game.
Despite misfiring on offense, the Jimmies led 38-32 early in the second half after scoring 8 of the first 9 points of the second 20 minutes.
But it was a struggle the rest of the way.
Iowa Wesleyan went on a 15-2 run that lasted nearly 8 minutes to build a 55-44 lead.
The Jimmies got within 3 as late as 60-57 on a basket by Allison Epping, but they scored just 3 points over the final 3:10.
Giuli Varriano finished her stellar career at JC with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Allison Epping, another senior, added 12 off the bench.
It also marked the final game for Cori Doubek, Amanda Rantapaa, Katie O’Neill and Ali Edwards.
Junior Kellie Schuneman was saddled with foul trouble and played just 21 minutes.
The Jimmies turned ball over 18 times and committed 20 fouls.
Iowa Wesleyan (28-6) wasn’t any better in taking care of the ball with 22 giveaways. They won the game at the foul line, making 24 of their 26 attempts.
Jessi Beachey score all 19 of her points in the second half for the Tigers. Melanie McCreight also had 19.

The Jimmies took their first lead of the game at the 12:06 mark of the second half on a free throw by Eric Shulstad. But Oklahoma Wesleyan scored on its next possession and stayed in front the rest of the way.
