MLK Freedom Walk
This past Sunday members of the BYAC participated in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Walk. The walk started at Paul & Babe and ended at the American Indian Resouce Center, where a small meal was provided by other area orginizations. Participants in the Freedom Walk then had the chance to sit down and listen to a variety of presentations including a Native American drum team, the Central Elementary School Choir, and Anton Treuer; the assistant proffessor of Ojibwe languages at BSU.

On 12/03/09 over 55 Bemidji High School students listened and gave input on a presentation by
Marcia Larson, City Parks and Recreation Director. Topics discussed included:
Up to date information about the skate park was presented, which received very supportive comments. Many of the students liked Site Design Group's ideas for the skate park.
The replacement of Carrington Field was also discussed, the city is actively looking to a new site for the replacement field.
Also though construction will limit use of the City Park next summer, we can also expect an expanded Frolf course and softball fields. In addition, there was discussion the addition of public basketball and tennis courts possibly a splash pad, (a mini-water park with fountains instead of a pool.) Although location was not specified.
Several other issues were discussed including trails, Algoma Park, and park near the Hospital, were discussed.
Next week, a similar presentation will hopefully be held at Trek North.

Memorial Blood Center/JROTC Blood Drive Great Success
The annual BHS blood drive on 12/02/09 was a great success. Jointly provided by the BHS JROTC and Memorial Blood Center, it allowed volunteers (both student and staff) sixteen years or older to donate a pint of their blood which could save up to three lives. There was a great turnout, and if this year is any indication, we can expect many eager donors for next year's drive. For more information on Memorial Blood Drives and donations, please visit www.mbc.org or call 1-888-Give-Bld.

GSA Listening Lunch
On 11/25/09 there was a listening lunch to explore interest for involvment and leadership of a GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) program at the high school. For Bemidji High School Students who were not able to attend the Listening Lunch the purpose was to explore interest in a student-led, student-organized school program that would be open to all students who are concerned about harassment to the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community). It is not exclusive to any group or orientation. The club would be much the same as all other non-cirricular programs at BHS. Currently there are a few resources available in the community, one of which would be "The Phoenix" BSU's GSA organization. For more information on this current program look at http://www.bemidjistate.edu/students/organizations/phoenix/. If any Bemidji High School students are interested in creating such a club input would be much appreciated.
