Beekeeping no longer illegal in New York City

Big Apple beekeepers are all a buzz with joy after the New York City’s Board of Health voted Tuesday reversed a long-standing ban on tending to honeybees.

Health officials had previously banned beekeeping because honeybees were considered just as dangerous as hyenas and poisonous snakes.

But the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene unanimously amended the law after research showed that honeybees, specifically the Apis mellifera, are not harmful to the public, citing few bee stings around the city, reported the New York Times.

It Takes a Rocket Scientist?

For years I have been saying that it doesn't take a rocket scientist to support Farm to School because of its common sense solution to serving local high quality food in schools and connecting children to where food comes from, but lo and behold, it does!

State grant program promotes sustainable farming ideas and innovations

Minnesota farmers have an unexpected opportunity to apply for funds that will help them research and demonstrate ways to improve resource efficiencies on their farms. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant Program is announcing a second call for grant proposals that target soil fertility, conservation tillage and energy.

“Farmers are full of good ideas they want to try. From grazing livestock to extending the fruit and vegetable growing season, many Minnesota farmers and researchers have turned their ideas into viable production practices with the help of this grant program over the past 20 years,” said Agriculture Commissioner Gene Hugoson.

GOEHRING LAUNCHES HUNGER FREE ND GARDEN PROJECT

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring and representatives of eight organizations today announced the start of a Hunger-Free North Dakota Garden Project.

“A major objective of the local food initiative of the North Dakota Department of Agriculture (NDDA) was addressing the issue of hunger in our state,” Goehring said at a Wednesday news conference. “The goal of the garden project is to grow and distribute a half million pounds of fresh food to needy individuals and communities without sources of fresh produce in our state during 2010.”
